Many Roles and Shows, just not for Everyone
Hello People, if you follow my page. I am returning to talk about a very important topic in Broadway critiques. Variety. I happen to follow a social media account that focuses on Broadway. While I love the daily postings on the account everyday, the only thing I don't love is that they always love everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. I don't really like that I sometimes have inaccurate expectations for shows. They raved constantly about how amazing the musical, Mean Girls, was and I happened to catch a bootleg of the show, that while I found entertaining, was not entirely spectacular, nor original. This was not the only time that I noticed how positive every single review by this person was. And I have a hard time believing that this person really just loves every musical they have ever seen. After positive after positive review came out, it didn't take long to notice that I won't have much variety from this account. I also have opinions about how certain singers can never play certain roles. Not to be sexist, racist, or discriminatory in any way. The problem is some songs are out of the reach of certain singers' abilities. Recently I heard Barrett Wilbert Weed singing "Defying Gravity" and while I love her, and think she is a very talented singer, it is easy to see that the songs in Wicked are very uncomfortably out of her range. The simple fact is that singers can't sing every kind of song. Every performer has a different set of skills and comfortable vocal abilities. And while I agree, she does perform many nights a week, and she could have sounded strained, I don't see her being the best portrayal of Elphaba, who is a character that I have loved since I first started listening to Broadway. The thing that made me very disappointed was that commentators on Youtube all were making excuses, saying that she would be perfect for the role, and the account that I follow blocked comments on their post on it, because comments got too mean(while I do not condone any bullying of any kind, which was the main reason for comment blocking, it does eliminate any sort of variety). The point is, I love Broadway, and I love many of the famous performers and stories that are told. That said, I do not believe that every musical is a hit, and I do not believe that every role is for every person who can sing an in-tune note. I simply wanted to serve as a source of variety when I'm surrounded by people who care too much about sparing feelings.
P.S. on the off chance Barrett Wilbert Weed should ever read this, I truly think you're amazing and I love your work.😃
