The Forbidden Theater: What is appropriate?
On NBC, there is a brand new show called Rise, which focuses on a working class community and the theater program run by a Will Schuester-esque (for all you Gleeks) teacher who wants to bring his passion of theater to the stage, by bringing a high school production of Spring Awakening to life. If anyone knows this play, you would know this is not the ideal play to place in a high school play, as it involves sexual awakening, teen pregnancy, teen suicide, and focuses on the ignorance of young teenagers kept in the dark by their parents. And as expected, parents and the principal disapprove of the play, saying the play should not go on. I've only seen the first episode, but I have had some questions about the ban on certain plays in most schools. Most popular plays I've seen performed in high schools are Grease, Legally Blonde, Music Man, High School Musical, Guys and Dolls, The Addams Family. Basically, all the plays are fairly child friendly, and probably won't scar any children in the audience. Because of these limitations, many plays that are considered great never make the stage, whether it be the budget or the appropriateness of the story. Spring Awakening ironically is a play that would be banned from a high school, but one of its themes focuses on keeping high schoolers in the dark about real world issues. And the plays they do play are hardly any more appropriate. Legally Blonde has sexual harassment, Grease glorifies smoking and losing your identity for another person, and Into the Woods has murder, adultery, and death while focusing on morality. If people watched Glee, you could see the discomfort of some of the kids while doing Rocky Horror, which would also be considered an inappropriate play as well. I understand that many adults don't want to expose children to the realities of the real world, especially when it comes sexual awakening, and I can understand why in a high school production, these themes could scar young children who simply wanted to watch their siblings, but maybe it wouldn't be such an inappropriate thing to use to educate young adults about realities of the world.
