Oscars 2018: A New Era in Cinema

As most of us know, the Oscars were about one week ago. There were many success as well as disappointments. I know I had my share. We watched history made as the first female cinematographer was nominated and we had our first African American win the Oscar for best original screenplay. We watched the third "amigo", Guillermo Del Toro, win his Oscar for Shape of Water, which in itself was an unusual masterpiece of the year. As we all know, this was a big year in Hollywood, with the Weinstein allegations and the women in Hollywood taking a stand, and hopefully leading to a movement which will help to change the attitude our society has in general. Speaking of women, there was a strong cast of female leads: a mother trying to gain justice for her daughter, a mute woman, being more complete than those who oppose her, a young teenage girl, trying to figure out who she is, a figure skater, rising above her class, and the leader of a newspaper, fighting against the barriers to tell the world the truth. These are just some of the examples of the progress being made for women in Hollywood. The best actors, although Oldman's win was pretty much expected, but I was personally happy to see all the credit Daniel Kaluuya deserved being granted to him and seeing young newcomers like Timothee Chalamet joining with the greats. While I could go on and on about the freshness of the nominees during the Oscars, overall the message is the same, and hopefully, Hollywood will continue down this path of progress and inclusion for everyone.
